Monkey Kingdom screened at Centro Cultural Perelló in Bani

September 14, 2016

DREFF held a screening of Monkey Kingdom at Centro Cultural Perelló in Baní on Wednesday September 14 at 11AM. The screening took place as part of the sixth edition of the Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF – www.dreff.org) and was held in the center’s main auditorium before an engaged audience of around 100 people.

Marc Jourdan, GFDD UN Programs & Outreach Manager, welcomed the large group of 60 students to the auditorium thanking them for their strong attendance. Following the screening, Jourdan and David Verastegui, Coordinator of the Eco Film Festival in Mexico, engaged in a lively discussion with the audience about the parallels between the monkey community and mankind. Verastegui noted how engrossed the students were in the film which told “the tale of a community of monkeys in Cambodia.” He emphasized that the discussion highlighted “themes such as environmental conservation and the responsibility we have as human beings for nature and the planet.”

Rosa, a student at the school stated that “the film teaches a strong message to young people as elephants suffer and people don’t realize this. We need to tell people this is not ok.”

Professor Dulce of the Liceo Vespertino Gregorio Luperon stated that “the way the animals unite to defend their territory or look for food has been lost in our society”. She called on the students, as the future of our world, to “be observant of this change to resolve it.”
