Students from Graciela Cierón Public School in Puerto Plata Attend Screening of Bluebird Man

September 17, 2016

Puerto Plata – The 6th edition of the Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF) included the documentary Bluebird Man, which tells the story of 94-year-old Al Larson, a self-taught conservation hero who has committed the last 38 years of his life to saving North America’s bluebirds. Al grew up in the remote Owyhee Mountains of Southwest Idaho during the Great Depression where he saw his first bluebird and developed a love for wildlife. Decades later, Al was inspired to join a growing movement of citizen scientists who over the past three decades have helped reverse bluebird declines by setting up networks of nest boxes specifically designed to provide nesting habitat for this enigmatic bird.

One of the screenings of Bluebird Man was held on a sunny afternoon, September 15, in the so-called Tacita de Plata at the beloved Ivan Garcia Theater School under the direction of by Arisleyda Bears. Their team, which welcomed us with open arms, were excellent hosts to the students from the Graciela Cierón public school.

As Yolanda Dobil, one of the teachers who saw the film, told us: “It was very interesting, because it shows young people and animals in natural settings, which serves as a motivation to ensure that we take care of our flora and fauna.”
