GFDD/DREFF and the “Cinemateca Dominicana” Feature Documentaries on How Children and Adolescents Can Take Care of the Environment During Annual Dominican Book Fair

May 1, 2018

The DREFF and the “Cinemateca Dominicana” featured special documentaries on the environment for children during Santo Domingo’s International Book Fair

During Santo Domingo’s International Book Fair, held from April 19-30, 2018, children and adolescents were treated to special showings of short documentaries and feature films on how to care and protect the environment.

The initiative was a joint effort carried out between the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), its sister organization in the Dominican Republic – the Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode) – and its Program on Environmental Films (DREFF), the Dominican Film Archive and the National Film Directorate of the Dominican Republic (DGCINE).

The films and documentaries were presented on specific dates three times a day, between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.  Hundreds of children, adolescents and adults enjoyed the free showing of the films presented by the DREFF and the Cinemateca.

The films and short documentaries featured were “¿Basura o Recurso? Experiencia de la República Dominicana” (Garbage or Resource? The Experience of the Dominican Republic); “7 Gramos:” “Ciclos;” “El Cambio” (The Change); “Travesía” (The Journey); “PeTER Plástico;” “Comiéndonos” (Eating Each Other); “Moravilla” and “En nuestra boca” (In Our Mouths). These last films were presented with the support of the Mexican ECOFILM Festival.

In honor of Earth Day visitors to the Fair, especially children and adolescents, were treated by the DREFF to a special reading of a short story on climate change and the environment “Why Should We Take Care of the Earth and How To Do It?” (non-official translation).
