DREFF Joins Forces with Cinema Planeta to Promote Dominican Environmental Filmmaking

Washington – The Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF) once again joined forces with Cinema Planeta from Cuernava, Mexico, to co-present two Dominican environmental film productions during the ninth edition of the Mexican competition, which will take place from May 2 to May 7, 2017: the documentary “Death by a Thousand Cuts,” by Jake Kheel and Juan Mejía Botero, and the winner of the 2015 Globo Verde Dominicano Award, “7 gramos”, directed by Hadzael Gómez and Jonatán Vila. DREFF and Cinema Planeta are part of the most important environmental festival network in the world, the Green Film Network (GFN).

This year, the official competition selection is made up of 11 documentaries from Russia, Sweden, China, Mexico, Bolivia, Belgium, Netherlands, USA, Austria-Luxembourg and Ecuador, which will compete for the best international documentary award.

The opening event will be the screening of Cinema Planeta’s first film production, Nahui Ollin: Movement Sun,  and for the award ceremony we will screen The Red Turtle, co-produced by Studio Ghibli. Other highlights include Mr. Pig directed by Diego Luna featuring actor Danny Glover and Before the Flood starring Leonardo DiCaprio which will be presented by Terry Tamminen, director of the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation.

“Earth,” the exclusively Mexican section of environmental film, will consist of 7 feature films and 14 short films with the presence of many of their directors. Environmental rooms, an educational project aimed at linking Morelos schools with environmental filmmakers and experts in the field, has confirmed the attendance of 15,000 students from every educational level, from kindergarten to university.
