September 13, 2016

GFDD/Funglode presented the short feature film, “Las Aventuras de Itzel y Sonia en Busca de los Guardianes de Agua” (The Adventures of Itzel and Sonia), to a group of some 110 school children on the first day of 6th Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF). The film’s director, Maria Fernanda Rivero, was also in attendance at the screening, held in the Dominican Children’s Library (BIJRD for its acronym in Spanish) in Santo Domingo.

Dulce Elvira de los Santos, director of the BIJRD, welcomed everyone to the Library where she stressed the importance of promoting and supporting such initiatives, adding that the Library, along with the office of the Vice President, was honored to receive the DR Environmental Film Festival for the fourth time in their screening rooms.

The film is the story of water. When the water runs out in a city in a  Mexican town, Itzel and his inseparable friend, Sonia the frog, with the help of grandmother, go in search of the Guardians of the Water. This work was carried out with the collaboration of 10 communities in Mexico, who helped create the story and its endearing characters.

After the film ended, Ms. Rivero spoke and interacted with the young students from Villa Carmen School, as well as fielded questions and comments. Rivero also explained how animation is done.

Finally, film director Rivero encouraged and invited students to also become guardians of the water and constant protectors of the environment. The children greeted the invitation with a great deal of excitement.
