Students from Instituto Iberia Enjoy the Screening of Garbage or Resource? A Dominican Republic Experience

The Participants Also Received a Short Seminar on the Recrearte Program

DREFF’ Year Round Environmental Film Screenings presented the film Garbage or Resource? A Dominican Republic Experience to and enthusiast young audience the Instituto Iberia in Santiago de los Caballeros,Dominican Republic. The screening, held on February 24th at the historical educational center’s library, also included a presentation of GFDD’s recycled art program ReCrearte, given by its coordinator Bertha Santana.

Victor Martinez, Director of the Institute, gave the welcoming remarks to the audience, followed by an introduction about the Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF) presented by Maria Victoria Abreu, GFDD’s Socioeconomic Program Manager. Students and teachers were proactively involved in a lively discussion on the importance of recycling for our planet’s sustainability.

Approximately 85 high school students participated in this event, where they learned about environmental issues and how to become and entrepreneur with a sustainable approach. They also showed a lot of interest in competing in GFDD’s Globo Verde Dominicano Award, as they have the opportunity to submit their own environmental audiovisuals to compete this year.

At the end the Instituto Iberia screened its own ecological short video, about a recent excursion to a rural community in the outskirts of the country, where students and teachers helped improve a house in poor shape.

This event is part of GFDD’s Year Round Environmental Film Screenings and the initiatives of the Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF). This year the DREFF will take place during September 8-13 in fourteen cities of the Dominican Republic.
