GFDD and FUNGLODE to Screen Environment-themed Film Play Again in January 2012
Santo Domingo, January 24, 2012
As part of its follow up to the very successful I DR Environmental Film Festival (DREFF), which took place last September, GFDD and FUNGLODE will host a special screening of environmental documentary Play Again at FUNGLODE auditorium on January 31, 2012 at 7pm. The movie, about the consequences of a childhood removed from nature, is the second in a series of regular screenings by both institutions that will be dedicated to covering environment themes.
One generation from now most people will have spent more time in the virtual world than in nature. New media technologies have improved our lives in countless ways. Information now appears with a click and far away friends are part of our daily lives.
But what are we missing when we are behind screens? And how will this impact our children, our society, and eventually, our planet? At a time when children play more behind screens than outside, Play Again explores the changing balance between the virtual and natural worlds. This moving and humorous documentary follows six teenagers who, like the “average American child,” spend five to fifteen hours a day behind screens. Play Again unplugs these teens and takes them on their first wilderness adventure – no electricity, no cell phone coverage, no virtual reality.
Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and its sister institution in the DR, Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), last September hosted its new initiative DREFF I to raise awareness and deepen understanding among Dominican audiences. At the same time, the Festival celebrates the beauty and diversity of the Dominican Republic’s natural heritage and offers insights into attitudes and actions that will contribute to its appreciation, conservation and sustainable use.
