DREFF Workshop Entertains As It Educates Against Ocean Pollution
Santo Domingo, 10/18/2011
In collaboration with GFDD and FUNGLODE, the Dominican Republic Environment Film Festival (DREFF) convened a unique workshop entitled “Plastic: The Real Sea Monster”, focusing on the recycling of plastic waste from the oceans.
Eco-artist Amy Blount Lay, an active member of the non profit environmental Surfrider Foundation, which is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's oceans, waves and beaches, will be on hand to instruct and guide students in creating a work of art know as a “Sea Trash Monster”– using material consisting exclusively of ocean waste. Joining forces with Amy is Lisa Boyle from the Plastic Pollution Coalition, a global alliance of individuals, organizations and businesses working together to stop plastic pollution and its toxic impacts on humans, animals and the environment.
As an avid surfer, Ms. Blount Lay has been flabbergasted at the amount of household packaging and waste she has encountered in the ocean. Inspired to use her art as a teaching tool, Amy devised a project which aims to educate people, particularly young children, about plastic pollution in our waters.
This eco-art project is an ongoing community action program to raise awareness of the threat common household and single-use plastics pose to marine environments. It is designed with the intention to educate and empower families to make better choices for themselves and the environment in which they live.
The plastic waste used in the workshop was gathered at the Beach Clean-Up Activity at Montesinos by youths from El Artístico school in La Romana.
DREFF, an initiative of GFDD and FUNGLODE, is committed to the development of national and international networks, the discussion of critical issues, and the establishment of training programs that bring national experts together with prominent international leaders in the field. The Festival takes place in Santo Domingo from September 8-11, 2011.
