Beach Clean-up Among the Activities Scheduled During the I DR Environmental Film Festival

Santo Domingo, 9/6/2011

As part of an extensive agenda of activities included in the Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF), Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and its sister institution in the Dominican Republic, Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), in collaboration with the City Council of Santo Domingo and the Dominican Ministry of the Environment, are pleased to announce a beach clean-up at Montesino beach in Santo Domingo on Thursday, September 8 from 2 – 4 p.m..

Participating in the clean-up will be a group of about 100 youths from Escuela Libre El Artístico, a school dedicated to preserving Dominican cultural industries, specifically metallic arts, in the city of La Romana.  They will be joined by a group of 25-50 representatives of the La Caleta community on the outskirts of Santo Domingo, sponsored by Fundación Rescate y Vida, a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving La Caleta and the surrounding areas and coasts.

Prior to the activity, the participants will receive a brief history of the beach, as well as instructions on the safest and most effective techniques for collecting and separating the waste from Patricia Cardona, Executive Director of Vida Azul, a nonprofit organization which works to preserve and protect the ecology of Dominican coastlines.  Vida Azul will also be providing the team with the gloves, scales and other supplies needed to conduct the clean-up.

The Dominican Ministry of the Environment will provide a number of representatives to help coordinate the participants once they arrive at Montesino beach, and they will also be providing the bags in which to collect the waste.

All of the plastic materials collected at Montesino beach will be cleaned and sent to La Romana, where the youths from El Artístico school will participate in a workshop on Friday, September 9th with artists Lisa Boyle and Amy Blount Lay, who will guide the students in creating a work of art from the waste.  You can read more about this workshop here.

GFDD and FUNGLODE invite anyone interested in assisting at the beach clean-up to join the other participants at the entrance to Montesino beach at 2 p.m.

The DR Environmental Film Festival forms part of GFDD’s mission to promote collaboration between organizations in the United States and the Dominican Republic in order to conduct research, enhance public understanding, design public policies, devise strategies, offer capacity building and foster exchange in the areas crucial for the social, economic and democratic development of the Dominican Republic, Caribbean and Latin America.  The Festival will provide youth and general audiences the opportunity to watch dozen of the best and most educational environmental films of the year, and learn about pressing issues facing the world’s ecology.
